The Sherman was designed early in the war and it should have been manouvrable, fast and reliable. And actually it had a very good gun for the time. If you take on account that when the Sherman entered service there was no real match for it, just PzKmpfw III and IV which could easily pierce and destroy. But with the special PzKmpfw IV they started realising about the Sherman's weakneses. I wonder why, after they started meeting more special Panzer IVs, Tigers and Panthers they didn't deploy anything better on the battle field.
