I'm a little confused. You're probably talking about the debate whether the road Neufchâteau-Bastogne or Arlon-Bastogne was to be used, but in fact, both were used. The Arlon route turned out to be more hard-fought and hindered than expected. I have not found a proof that the route was Patton's order.
He was later criticized for his orders a) to proceed at night, and b) to bypass German centers of resostance, which both failed.
