Hello KnightMove, back from work and I think you deserve this one !
Patton's main attack was straight down the Arlon-Bastogne highway ( where the 3rd Army commemorative kilometre markers can be seen today ). Unfortunately, this is where most German resistance was met and especially, the road dips through a very deep gorge at Martelange where 4th Armored 'bogged' when the bridge was blown there.
The decision was apparently made by Patton in conference with General Troy Middleton on December 20th. Middleton recommended attacking along Arlon-Bastogne ( 12 miles ) with 4th Armored attacking Neufchateau-Bastogne ( 9 miles ). Patton decided against this idea, preferring instead to keep his forces concentrated, and the main thrust went along the Arlon road, with only infantry attacks further East.
This information is from MacDonald again, citing John S D Eisenhower, Frank Price and interview with 4th Armored's Exec. Officer.
Anyhow - your move !
