i'd have to say Gen Lucien Truscott... he was the commander of the 3rd US INF.. when he took over as their commander he decided they were too soft so he instituted RANGER physical conditioning.. he basically turned the 3rd infantry into a ranger division.. they went on to receive more congressional medals of honor than any other..
in battle he was utterly dependable and a superb tactician..
how can you not respect a guy who says to his troops on the eve of their first battle "you are going to meet the boche soon.. carve your name in his goddamn face! dismissed." crude perhaps but with an eloquence all its own
