It would have put the Wehrmacht generals in a stronger bargaining position. Once the war started and Hitler won successes due to poor leadership on the western side, the generals had nothing to bargain with. An embarrassment such as the Rhineland fiasco would have put Hitler at a disadvantage if not overthrown.
