Hitler needed a 'limited' victory at Kursk.
To show his 'antsy' allies Germany could still win.
A bulge in the lines looks like a suitable place[kursk]with Germany's classic pincer attack.
Don't think the German staff knew just how deep the Russians had defended.

And it did'nt help stalling the attack for the limited amount of 'indestructable'Tiger tanks to be made available.
Hitler should have remembered how the 'indestructable' battleship Bismark went down without sinking the first merchant ship.

A mute point really.
Even if there was a German victory at Kursk, they could'nt exploit it as the Americans were to invade Sicily.
Hitler would have had to pull troops/equipment from the east.
