Most likely given everything I have read on US / British tank actions it was one or two vehicles firing as rapidly as they could that did the damage. Allied crews rarely spared ammunition in making sure their opponets were really "dead." This usually meant multiple hits and the target exploding or brewing up. I can show plenty of other photographic evidence to back this claim up.
