Although getting a bit long in the tooth, ( the book not me ! ), a good general and very readable introduction to the events of D-Day remains Cornelius Ryan's ' The Longest Day ' which is full of dramatic first-hand accounts from all sides.

It's still easy to find and will hopefully lead you on to read the more in-depth stuff.
