actually I remember from reading about the capture of U-551 that there is some sort of hatch that can be opened from inside the vessel to fill and sink it.
The recon plane was a single engine fighter.
Real recon aircraft was the FOUR (4) engine FW-200. Single engine craft had too short of range.
