In the period between 22nd June 1941 and 31st December 1944, the
" Totenkopf " division lost an astronomical number of men, a total of 53,794. No other division within Army Group South sustained such a disastrously high level of losses. " Wiking ", which was a professional and experienced division, suffered 11,098 losses.
