There has been some historical revision over Hitlers so-called 'no retreat' order. Some historians are taking the view that Kesselring took when he read it, that it wasn't an order as such, but a poorly worded morale boosting message.
Hitlers reaction when he heard that Rommel had ordered a full retreat does tend to back up that view, as he took the news with sadness but didn't get angry.
