Now more I think of it, FramerT has raised an interesting point once Hitler gave the go ahead for the extermination program Hitler now committed Germany to victory or defeat. Even if he was assassinated and Germany facing defeat on all fronts they would have no choice but to fight on to the bitter end.

If there was no extermination program then it may have been possible to open up talks with the Allies and try to save Germany from more destruction.
