As I'm sure Stalin wasn't in the best mood upon hearing this news

But Stalin was an Evil B******, so it's no suprise he didn't want his son back.
Not so sure this is the case, after all Stalin was a father. In the beginning of the war all Russians who fell into German hands, were considered traitors to their motherland and a few which escaped captivity were either put on trial or sent to Shtrafbat units. ( this is where criminals, political prisoners and others were sent to repay the motherland and clean their slate by spilling their own blood, as you can imagine not very many ever made through the whole war. )

How would this have looked, if Stalin let others die but saved his own son? Also the fact that if he had indeed released Paulus, this would have had serious drawbacks.

This is a decision that I would never want to make.

If it was Churchill's son, an SAS team would probably be sent in. It would also be good practice for years to come...
sent in maybe, but would they hav been successful? very doubtful. Stalin's son at the time of his death was in Germany, not exactly the easiest place to get to at that time.
