I agree with PzJgrs post abouit U 571. Also, he is correct in that there are Kriegsmarine submariners that could take apart Das Boot, I know because I spent two days with them in Bad Camberg, Germany in 2000. They did completely dismiss U 571, they did not care too much for Das Boot and, amazingly enough, the U Boat vets I talked with, liked: The Enemy Below; as their favorite film of this type.

A few of their reasons for that was that the Kapitan (Curt Jurgens) and the XO (Theodor Bikel) reminded these guys of how their Kapitan: Kurt Freiwald; was. They also appreciated with this film, that the German Submariners, were not depicted as fanatics-having only one member of that crew as being interested in Hitler's policies.
