Now that threat exists no more, the nazis needed another scapegoat to keep the masses from seeing what is real. That is where the Jews come in. The communists were more than just a thorn on the side. They were Hitler's competition for power.

So, both the communists and the Jews were enemies but only sequentially. Without the communists, the nazis could not come into power and conduct their war on the Jews. If the communists were not around from the beginning, then I do not think (my opinion) that they could have conducted their war on the Jews with Germans just accepting it. there would be some who would accept it but I also think that there would be public renounciations as well compared to how it really happened.
