I'm sure if you had a metal detector the thing would "beep" constantly in major battle/supply areas.
Places like Tarawa where the Navy's rounds went off half the time is most probably loaded with explosives, of a heavy caliber, buried deep beneath the surface.
Not to mention garrison islands like Guadalcanal, Rabul, Truk, Yap, New Guinea, Iwo, Okinawa, Peleliu, Wake, Saipan and underwater as well.
EOD has there work cut out for them.
Europe/Mediterranean/Africa/Asia(s)/Nesia(s) after both 1 & 2 needed Brass b_lls to pull a plow or run a tractor over those grounds.... even today.
