Personally, I also admired Rommel when I was a lot younger but as I read and learned more about him, I finally viewed him as an over-rated commander but a very good leader.
The really good generals know how to be a leader and a commander at the same time. Rommel didn't have the neccessary schooling for the upper echelons of command. He's a victim of the Peter Principle.
Patton was both a leader and commander.
There are a lot of good generals out there but I tend to side with Sun Tzu's saying "The best way to win a war is not to fight a battle at all."
