Not long after I graduated from HS, a younger boy who lived in the area and was still in school stayed out to help the family gather corn. The combine he was operating jammed and he got out to try to clear it, but left the picker in gear. As he pulled on the jammed corn stalks, his right arm got caught by the gatherer and started pulling him in. He put his left foot on the machine to pull back against it and it slipped in also. The net result was the corn picker severed his right arm mid-forearm and his left leg just above the ankle. He was a good 30 miles from town, by himself with a manual shift truck. He managed to drive himself to the hospital and survived.
