SOUTH PORTLAND -- Robert J. Sheehy Sr., 91, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Feb. 17, 1916, the son of Lawrence J. and Viola Rouane Sheehy, and attended schools there.
A career military man, Lt. Sheehy served in the Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. During WWII, he was a member of a special glider battalion, a part of the 17th Airborne Division. In 1943 he attended officer candidate school and received a commission in the infantry. Lt. Sheehy took part in the invasion of southern France and the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in both hands during a battle at Muenster as his division was crossing the Rhine River, and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Following the war, his commission reverted back to that of sergeant, and during the Korean Conflict as a member of the Second Infantry Division, was involved in the now famous battles of Heartbreak Ridge, Bloody Ridge, and the May Massacre. Lt. Sheehy also served and lived with his family at Army bases in Giesen and Frankfurt, Germany; Osaka and Otsu, Japan; at Camp Adair in Oregon; in Panama; at Fort Rodman in New Bedford, Mass.; and at Ft. Williams in Cape Elizabeth before its deactivation. Following his retirement from the Army, he continued to serve as a civilian, working in the supply division of U.S. Army recruiting.
In retirement, Lt. Sheehy was an active and helpful volunteer for many years with the V.F. W. No. 832, where he was a life member and former Quartermaster. He was also active with the 5th Infantry Regiment, where he was reported to be the last living member.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Sheehy Wiktor, who died Aug. 29, 2001. He was also predeceased by two brothers and a sister.
Surviving is his wife of 69 years, Leocardia Pinkos Sheehy of South
Portland; three daughters, Patricia Stanley of Meriden, Conn., Valerie Connor of Starkville, Miss., and Robyn Hogan of Portland; two sons, Robert J. Sheehy Jr. of South Portland, and Timothy J. Sheehy of Jay; 17 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland where V.F.W. Post 832 will conduct a service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Church, Main Street, South Portland.
