James Caan's character is fact, not fiction. In actual fact, Dohun took four casualties to the aid station. Cornelius Ryan interviewed him and asked him if he would have shot the doctor. Dohun replied, "I don't know to this day if I would have shot him". Dohun was turned in by the doctor but it was his CO, Lt Col Steve Chappuis 2/502nd PIR, who placed him under a minute's arrest.
