'Major Harry Carlyle' - he's the British officer with the umbrella - is a composite character. The carrying of an umbrella is something which was done by Maj Digby Tatham-Warter, CO A Company 2nd Bn 1st Parachute Bde. His reason was his bad memory. He could never remember the password. Since a German officer would never carry an umbrella, Tatham-Warter knew he would pass safely through any checkpoint!

'Maj Fuller' was in reality Maj Brian Urquhart. In writing the screenplay, Cornelius Ryan, would seem to have considered the movie's audience and avoided having two characters with the same surname.
