Twas her "Captain" more than the ship (I believe), a bit beyond the right place at the right time sorta luck. Skill ?
Aboard "Amatsukaze", during the first battle for Guadalcanal, "Hara" piloted his ship between "San Francisco" & "Hiei" (both shooting at each other at a range of 2,500 yards), to cross ahead and race down "San Fransisco's" port side (wrecking her remaining secondary battery with gunfire), to launch a spread of four LL torpedoes, which all were heard to hit. With chagrin's to "Hara", and fortunately for "San Fransisco", they were too close to arm themselves. (not the only "Duds" launched that night) Friday the 13th
