Yes, I believe this is true I read in Flags of our Fathers about two soldiers who held out for 4 years. They lived on captured American supplies and food. They finally found out the war was over when they read about Marines being in Japan for christmas in leatherneck magazine, so the knew the war had ended and surrendered.
