Onoda was the exception in that he believed the war was still on and he waged a guerilla war until he surrendered in 1974. he was killing the "enemy" until then. the japanese government paid the philippines $1 million to compensate the families of those killed after the japanese surrender.

nearly all the other stragglers stayed behind for some other reason.
