Agreed! My Grampy was a Bevin Boy, wanted to be a gunner in the RAF (his brother was a pilot flying Stirlings) and as I understand it when he went to volunteer they said 'oh no you don't, you are going down a mine' (words to that effect). Glad he did because he would never have met my grandmother otherwise.
The Jimmy Savil quotes paint a very pretty picture, not sure it was like that everywhere. I know my grandfather was involved in cave ins and lost friends in the pits.
But yes, about time they received some recognition.
