Vice Adm. Frank 'Jack' Fletcher, operational commander at both the battle of Coral Sea and the battle of Midway - two critical turning points in the war in the Pacific. He went on to numerous other Pacifi operations and wound up serving in the postwar occupation of northern Japan.
I always marvel at how deceptive the pictures of the fighting generals and admirals can be - he looks like a granddad, not a fighting admiral.
