Re: Blackburn Skua raised from Norwegian fjord
The Skua and its cousin the Blackburn Roc would be strong contenders to the title "Ugliest Airplane Ever"!
Not so far from where the Skua was found lies another interesting wreck, a BV 222 "Viking" flying boat. The plane was operational at the end of the war, but was scuttled by the british 8801 Aircraft Disarmament Wing going berserk with det.-cord and TNT in 1945. The plane went straight down to the sea floor, approximately 90 meters, were it lies today. There have been discussions on salvageing, but this is a huge plane so that will be a big undertaking.
There are also a couple of FW 200 "Condor"s on the sea floor. There was an attempt to salvage one of them some years ago, but the construction of the FW 200 airframe is generally weak, it broke apart when it surfaced.
One more interesting project is coming up, hopefully this summer/fall.
A P-51D "Mustang" from RAF went down 12th of April 1945, on an attack by 47 RAF "Mosquito"s and "Mustang"S on a shipyard in southern Norway. The pilot, Fredrick Bradford (?..not sure of name) was killed.
