If you look at alot of the wartime pictures you will notice that most soldiers are just carrying a "Combat load". Most will shuck their packs and equipment as soon as they can while in battle. They will be carrying the bare minimum that is necessary. After being in combat a soldier would realize what items were needed or really useful. The gas mask and bag always seemed to be the first to go LOL. Though the bag was used to carry other items.
