According to Brothers In Arms: The Epic Story of the 761st Tank Battalion, WWII's Forgotten Heroes, Jackie knew that the regulations permitted officers to carry thier sidearm off base and that it did not destinguish a diffrence between White or Black officers so he fought it untill given permition to carry off base.
