Yes. That is one tough burden to carry. He believed he did it but one key point to the story, if really true, showed that he was had. Goering's supporters apparently put one over him. That and maybe a feeling of shame and fear made him bottle up the whole thing all these years. His story is so simple that's it's plausible.
