If the Trieste area pre and postwar is one of your interests you could do a lot worse than go to this website:

The site is "a-Trieste", has an English section and I have been a member there for some time, writing as "Ron". Some of the members are very knowledgeable about WW2 history and once you have joined you can ask specific questions and get a reply in English.
Whilst writing may I also mention another reference book that has stood me in good stead over the years, "The Campaign in Italy" by Eric Linklater. Rather dry reading but excellent for checking up on dates etc.

During the period October 1942 to January 1947 my wartime "Cook's Tour" took me to the following places:
North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Austria, Egypt & Germany.
My units were the: 49th Light Ack Ack Rgt.RA and
The 4th Queen's Own Hussars.
