When the bomb hit
Arizona it bored through the decks and into the powder and ammo magazines. There were over 1,000 1,800 pound 14" shells and enough powder to blow them all over 20 miles. All this went off in seconds, but was contained, partly, by the armored hull. The forward crews' quarters were directly over the magazines.
