Who would have? Even the Soviets had national treasures, and they never tore all the churches down either. I've seen some ugly places around though, Kursk train station is one of them. I'll never forget the first time I came up out of the metro and saw it, if there had been a bulldozer close by I would have used it!! That place is really ugly. Some of the other Soviet buildings are quite interesting though, Stalins skyscrapers are something to look at.
