Default Re: Has the experience of the combat infantryman changed?

IRT the modern infantryman, I really don't think you can compare them much with soldiers that are not of the 20th century or later. So much has changed in how we fight, and how technically proficient troops are. Troops carry more, and still WALK A LOT. Go on a two day 55 mile movement to contact with 80 pounds of stuff, a flak jacket that holds in your heat and makes you feel like a baked potato in a microwave, a kevlar helmet that holds in more heat, and maybe even a 240 Golf and tell me we don't walk like the old boys did. Trust me, we're not as mechanized as people would have you think. MOUT is especially tiresome, as I'm sure mortman would concur. In the past troops might bypass or just burn a village. Now we go door to door, room to room, looking for the enemy, carrying all that gear, going up and down stairs, fighting in confined spaces and waiting for someone to pop out from around a corner, or for a grenade to come rolling down a hallway. I'm sure troops in the past experienced just as much fear, but at different times and in different ways. My opinion is that the psychological aspects are dependent entirely upon the minds of the people your considering. Troops today on the whole much more educated and trained and I think that makes a difference.

Who knows Mortman, maybe I'll bring you CAS when the fight with Iran opens up.
