It isn't, but not many people will know that. I used to hunt rabbits with my buddies in Lucerne Valley back in the late '60's. Explored all over that area around Camp Rock Road, as far north as Highway 40, as far to the east as the California border, and as far south as Palm Springs. The Twentynine Palms USMC Reserve and Training Area sits roughly in the middle of that area; it's off-limits to civilians. Victor Valley is now pretty much built up with housing tracts and shopping malls, but Lucerne Valley is not much changed from the 1930's when farmers grew rice there; the climate was noticeably wetter then. off-roaders and dirt bikers have torn up some of the terrain and in spots it does look like a mechanized army has moved through the area...maybe that is what is attracting the movie crews?
