My sister e-mailed me today and asked me if I remembered something we saw many times when we were kids. Every year our family vacationed at Cape May, New Jersey. Besides its famous lighthouse there was also a WWII era concrete bunker near the entrance to Delaware Bay. We could walk there from town in roughly half an hour. One or two times, I can't remember, my Dad took us to see the "Cement Ship" when we went to gather Cape May "Diamonds". The ship was clearly visible sticking out of the water about 2 or 3 hundred yards off shore. Only 30 or 40 feet of the bow was sticking out at an angle. Even from the distance it was clearly made of cement. My dad used to tell us that it had sailed from Europe during WWII but sank there before making it to Philadelphia (I think). Do any of you fine folks have any info on this ship? Were there others? What purpose did they serve? Who came up with the idea? Thanks if you can help.

Yes there are others. One has been in Galvestion Bay for decades. It was built during WWI and was grounded by a hurricane. The purpose of the use of cement was to save the steel for shells and bombs and other stuff that kills.

If you put cement ships in the search engine Google you will get much more information.

As a side note they also experimented with making ships out of ice and wood chips.
