The Tirpitz lasted longer...but, the Bismarck got out and strutted her stuff for around a week, was battle tested reliable against the best one-on-one Royal Navy vs. German Navy, and was feared beyond belief.

I like the Bismarck...

MARNE

Ditto, I would have to go with the Bismarck. It is ashame that so much went into these 2 ships with very little results. Hitler squandered, as usual, his great weapons.

Neither. Both, in hindsight, were a waste of resources for the Germans.

True enough. Hitler should have at least used them against the Convoys destined for Russia. The ships would have been close enough to be under the umbrella of the luftwaffe.

I would vote for the Bismarck since it did for awhile put much fear in the Allies and it did a good job on the HMS Hood.

Tirpitz presence alone meant the allies had to send big warships & many of em to protect convoys to Russia.

Yes, this is all true however in size, firepower and crew the Tirpitz simply had more.

Also if the Tirpitz would have been battle tested, it would have suffered the same glorious fait that the Bismark had

But they did not make a movie about the Tirpitz. No publicity = no fame and glory.

Yeah, 'Bismark' or 'Tirpitz' was like yelling 'Tiger' on the battlefield. It rocks even the people in the rear beyond all practical proportion.

The Tirpitz had refits and upgrades the Bismark didn't have the chance to enjoy, and altough the Bismark sunk a battle-cruiser, I'd have to agree that just the longer presence of the Tirpitz cost the Allies far more in attention and precaution let alone when she did sail and we ordered a giant convoy to scatter which became Uboat meat.

I'd have to go with, for over-all effect, cost and worry to us, the Tirpitz.

I favor the Bismark, but the only real effect either had was the diversion of resources used to control their movement and to sink them. The Tirpitz was like a caged tiger, scary, but more of a circus attraction than threat. It was similar to the Russian Aircraft carrier attempts. Expensive toys that they did not know what to do with.

neither one actually.

What would of come if the Tirpitz had left the fjords with some sort of air protection and would of not had the RAF all over it ? One can imagine what she might have done instead of sitting there like a ripe plum ready to be picked ........which she was.

The KM heavy Schiffe were squandered away due to ineptness
