Tirpitz
Seem to me that one important participant in the north Atlantic naval conflict, the Tirpitz, is missing here.
For those of you interested in the latest research concerning this mighty battleship, I can recommend "Tirpitz-Hitlers last battleship", by John Asmussen and Kjetil Aakra. The book was published one year ago, and according to my last information from author Kjetil Aakra, there are aproximately 100 books left.
The book has norwegian/english text:
- Tirpitz-boka English

Re: Tirpitz
well sadly the only thing the Tirpitz really did during her time in the See's was described at the start of the page.............she was a threat, and that was it. running she did until her demise

Re: Tirpitz
Aware of her exploits, or lack there of, just curious what happened to her postwar like? I understand that the Graf Spee still lies in the river Plate, or at least the hull.

Re: Tirpitz
Our Norwegian members can probably add a lot more detail, but the hull of the Tirpitz was gradually broken for scrap in the post-war years. I believe a few relics may be still there.....

Joe,
This is completely off-topic, but I was wondering where can I find online art renderings of tanks such as the Chaffee in your signature? Thanks from a newbie!

Re: Tirpitz
its strange that hitler never used tirpitz i mean look at that armament it was a steel fortress and could of changed the war in europe very quickly if used.

Re: Tirpitz
He was afraid it would be sunk. It would lower morale severely in Germany, so he just wanted it nice and safe. Just look what happened when the Hood was sunk-It was seen as a national disaster in Britian.
And plus Hitler wasn't too keen on the navy at this stage.

Re: Tirpitz
Personally he should of sent it straight to the Baltic to help Wehrmacht ground forces, the Prinz and the Scheer proved themselves to be a very good Soviet Batterie busters along woith the assorted Zerstörers that had not been sunk during 44 into 45.

Re: Tirpitz
I also wouldn't trust the site's armor penetration values. They are given for penetration of "Rolled Hardened Armor" and "Face Hardened Armor." But, the differences between the two are far greater than you find in any testing specs, particularly where the penetration is around 3" (76mm) or greater.
Also, most specs give a greater difference to cast and rolled than whether either is face hardened. One might also note that rolling and casting are forming processes while face hardening is a finishing process. On the whole, I don't put much stock in the numbers given.

I say, I think the Tirpitz was rather more of a non-participant
