Hi guys,
I am off to Normandy for a week on wednesday and I was wondering if any of you can tell me about the composition of defenders on Mont Pincon? I believe they may well have been fromm Fallschirmjager Division 3 but I am not sure. I need the info to run a field exercise for my war studies students when we are there.
So basically who was on Mont Pincon during the Bluecoat operation in 1944?

first, you are taking a video corder correct ? You better !!
second Casemate books is going to cover this area and Bluecoat in one of their smaller inexpensive books this year sometime.
I believe it was a holding area for the 9th and 10 SS Panzer Divisions, and the last SS unit was quite active with it's Pz IV's......I better check my files.

Yes Please ! pics of Hill 112 and for Bluecoat and the area around Vire.
Red, the 3rd Fallshirm was active just to the east of Vire. Mt Pincon was defended intially by the 21st Panzer Division and two smaller infantrie divisions. Right near here the famous shoot out with Jagdpanthers of the 654th ? against Churchills took place. At the end of July into first week of August the 9th and 10th SS plus the Schwere SS Panzer Abt. 502 came into play which then stalled out the British advance, as the German units slowly pulled back.......
I am going to try and find the Csemate book titles I had posted some months previously to post here again, and it may greatly help your studies......

RedBaron - lucky old you !
I'm sure the Jagdpanther action was mentioned on the Forums some time ago by Sommecourt - he's your man for this area.
One or two recommended books are :
' Hill 112 - Cornerstone Of The Normandy Campaign ' and ' Normandy : The British Breakout ' both by Major J J How, MC. And this is from ' The Battle For Normandy ' by Belfield & Essame ; -
'To the North-East, Mont Pincon lay in the centre of the line of the Bluecoat offensive. On 6 August, it was captured by a remarkable feat of arms. In the grilling heat, the fighting at the foot of the mountain had been extremely vicious, one battalion being reduced to 60 men. In the thick of this battle, a few tanks of the 13/18 Hussars found a track. Under cover of a smokescreen, they pushed up the steep sides of the mountain; one tank overturned, another had its tracks blown off, but eventually a mere seven tanks reached the summit. They were rapidly reinforced by more tanks and then the mountain was blanketed in fog. By the following morning, a good-sized force had been assembled and the Germans were driven off. That day, the new XXX Corps Commander came up to survey the scene. Horrocks had been appointed to this post, and his dynamic presence soon made itself felt. To many, it seemed as if the almost miraculously successful capture of Mont Pincon had been rewarded by the reappearance of the universally trusted Horrocks, now recovered from his North African wounds.' ( p.189 )
( It should perhaps be mentioned that the authors had close professional links with Horrocks ! )

According to ' Victory In The West Vol. 1 : The Battle Of Normandy ' ( the British Official History ) the four-mile section of German front which included the Mont Pincon positions was defended by eight battalions of the 276th and 326th Infantry Divisions, with LXXIV Panzer Corps also in the area but not on Mont Pincon itself.
Interestingly, the arrival of Horrocks came about due to the sacking of Hucknall and others from XXX Corps ; General Dempsey was apparently exasperated by slow progress and lack of 'drive' up to this point.

Not sure what route you will take, but there is a good tour to be had taking groups from Caumont up to the high ground around St Martin. I have articles on my website, especially at:
http://battlefieldsww2.50megs.com/no...ttlefields.htm
As Martin mentioned I have also researched the Scots Guards vs the Jagdpanthers (first use of them against British/US units) and have some good material from the war diaries if you need it.
As Erich says there are several titles coming out in the Battleground Europe series; personally I have been disappointed with the WW2 titles in comparison to the WW1 titles in the same series.
I have seen your Uni website before - nice to see some WW2 'in the field' teaching. Nice site as well.
