Many people who visit the African battlefields are not allowed to take remants of war until the former Allied governments pay these countries compensation?

Cool

Huh? Excuse my Frainch... but could you explain it better?

You can't take, let's say a piece of a Pz IV from the desert because the Lybian government doesn't allow you to or what?

Yes=i couldve been a little clearer Friedrich. Ok, well a good example is this. In Libya i believe it was , an Aussie group leader picked up a rusticated Afrika Korps helmet. Authorities seized him at the airport and told him that no-one was allowed to take remnants back to former Allied countries, or Germany or Italy until these countries are reimbursed by the Allied governments...

From what little I have read, the massive minefields in N.Africa were not cleared by the Allies, and large parts of the desert are still unsafe to cross. Even today a number of people are still killed and wounded due to mines. From what I understand the goverments of the countries affected want the Allies and Axis countries to either pay for, or clear up the battlegrounds. They take the view that it was your war (Allies/Axis) you clear it up!

Given my recent posting about Libya giving up ground for a Desert Rats memorial it could be that they are looking to attract Western tourists to an area that I suspect has changed little since WW2. In that respect things could change.

A piece of advice - have you ever tried shipping this stuff from place of origin; via surface?

Oh, now I get it...

Well, I guess it's fair that we clear those old mine fields... He put them there, we must take them out...

On the other hand Libya profited from the sale of destroyed tanks and other kit as scrap metal will into the 60's. Did they hand over any cash for this saying 2well it was yoor tank so here's the cash.." ?
