Re: Use the Search Function!
A suggestion, How about have a larger are for the search function. Have a search field provided. Like what you see on other websites except it would only search within the forum. This would be easier, especially for the guests or new members. Plus, we have all been conditioned by Google.

Re: Use the Search Function!
Thanks Matt! I was inspired by a similar animation I saw elsewhere, so I made a ww2f specific one.
PzJgr, I'd add it if it were simple addition, but it would require some major hacking. Besides, the full search function is a whole separate page, if we include a small section for people to enter text (like google), they may miss the full feature set available to them. On the whole the members here are quite good about using the search, and we already have two locations on every page where members are directed to the search utility.

Re: Use the Search Function!
I agree, we have covered so much of what happened in WW2 (and The Red Rabbi says that also most of what did't happen but if it did then the Reich victory ought to be have been guaranteed ) that as such a perusal of the Search function will provide much repetition.
Not that we don't like to chew the same cud over and over again, but anyway

I'm use this function in more Forums, for many years. In fact, my inscription in WWIIF are because one search in other Forum conduced me at this post of C. Evans Tribute to a friend.. And in the most of theese, no needed register for your use. Its a very useful tool of research -and a norm of netiquette-.

Re: Use the Search Function!
O.K I tried, twice actually. I am interested in 97 Squadron and so typed that into the search box. However it appears the number 97 is too short. On my first attempt I presumed I had left squadron out but apparently not as my second attempt came up with the same result as posted below.
The search term you specified (97) is under the minimum word length (3) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.
If this term contains a wildcard, please make this term more specific.

Re: Use the Search Function!
You're quite right, David - groups of numbers and letters can be a problem to search on this ( and other ) websites.
We've had a few discussions about 97 and I've cheated a bit by searching 'pathfinder' to come up with a couple of my own ancient threads ....

I Use alternative option: The Google Tool: "Search in this Site". Not is than accuratte, but very useful tool too. Is bring to you means the Google Toolbar.
An example -With Google España, my country- on this site. Take a look, my friends: 97 Squadron site:ww2f.com - Buscar con Google
Dear Peppy: I suggest you convert this thread in a Sticky

or you could use the the "inurl:" command in Google.
e.g.----> inurl:ww2f.com 97 squadron
Is one of these what you are looking for, David? These are the returns I got when I used the above search string. You might try different combinations.
In my job, I sometimes have to search for fixes to server problems I am facing. Most of the time I find that Google can find solutions better than the website's own search engine. IBM and Symantec's site's search functions are horrible. They usually produce everything but what you are looking for.

Re: Use the Search Function!
Thanks Von Poop, and I completely agree. A few of our newest members might want to make better use of the search function. PLEASE.
