Timing Out
Can one of the moderators or Otto tell me why my account times out so fast. Some days I can be on for quite awhile between posts. Other times like this evening I made a post and by the time I wanted to post again 15 minutes later I'd timed out and had to log in again. Sometimes I haven't noticed that I've already been logged out - write a response to something only to have it disappear because I'm told I can't post because I'm not logged in.
Thanks!!

Re: Timing Out
Michelle, do you have the "Remember Me" box checked?

Re: Timing Out
I looked through the profile and can't seem to find a "Remember Me" box to check - therefore, I probably don't!! Where is it and maybe the problem that has frustrated me for a year will end. You have no idea how many good posts disappeared that I didn't bother writing again!

Re: Timing Out
Okay - so I get the "Duh!" award. I automatically ignore the Remember Me at most sites when I log in so never even noticed it until now... Since I regular clear cookies I assume it will only function during the time I am actually logged in?

Re: Timing Out
Usually when you log into a website, the browser you use has a "remember me" option, so you don't need to log in each time, and you won't get times out. I haven't actually had to type in my username/password for months, I just let the browser remember the info. If you clear all you cookies however, then you will likely need to log in again afterward.
I use Firefox, so I'm not too sure about your browser (Internet Explorer 7.0), which I haven't used in years. I'll look into it though.

Re: Timing Out
DOH! DOH! DOH! Thank you, I had written a pm to one of the mods the other day about this. I had written two rather long posts with references and links and had this very same thing happen to me twice within two hours. Boy was I steamed. Michelle, what I discovered is that there is no right/click copy function in the post. If you forget to click the 'remember me' box again, highlight your text, go to edit in your browser bar and select copy from the drop down menu. It will copy your post, you can paste it somewhere or paste it when you try to repost. I have a text document in My Documents just for this. I use it if it is a long post. Jeff & Otto, a couple of pints on me. I too, seem to look right past the remember me box.
In fact I do that with every post now, I highlight and copy it before i hit preview or submit.
Take care,
Bill

I apologize Michelle, I missed your reply to my question. Good to see that GroFaz picked up my slack.
Salty, glad to see it helped your problem, also.

Re: Timing Out
Join the club Bill,
Same here as Michelle, I'd peck away a paragraph, then log on again and try again. The one thing that seems uncertain about all this is, I always hit the remember me square.

Re: Timing Out
Sounds like a lot of trouble, but if you use Wordpad or Word to write your entry, copy it, and paste it to the reply section, you still have your original if the login remember me fails.

Re: Timing Out
Thank you JR,
A fine idea, I had something similar in mind, an e mail draft, then do the cut and paste trick.

Re: Timing Out
Glad to see my question helped identify that I wasn't the only one!
Thanks Otto and Jeff. The Remember Me feature has been working. For my big writeups like the history of the 3LAA, I'm typing it into a Word document in its entirety so am just copying and pasting into posts.
Thanks Salty for the idea of using the browser bar edit feature. It would have saved some great responses - but it may have kept me out of trouble a few times as well that I lost the initial response.
Hope the remember me will work for you Jack. May I suggest that if it still doesn't work for you, try using your word program to save your writing rather than email. You may find that your stories in particular will matter to your family (in what I hope is a very long distant future) and they may not think to look here to see the stories about your experiences. If you save them on word you will also have a record on your own computer.
Again, thank you gentlemen!
