I don't entirely agree with the view that the Duke is a better WW2 actor while Clint is a better Western actor. I think this perception could be explained by the fact that the Duke had been able to do more WW2 based films, including actual WW2 propaganda films, than Clint.
As for saying Clint is the better Western actor than the Duke, I think it would be more proper to state that Clint was given the opportunity to explore a vaster range of Western characters than the Duke.
Remember, the Duke made Westerns (and other movies) at a time when Hollywood was more into typecasting. Actors (and actresses) tend to play similarly themed characters in Duke's time. Note the career of Errol Flynn. Also take note with what happened to George Reeves. He had a very meaty role in From Here to Eternity but many of his scenes were cut because the test audience shouted "Superman" every time he was in the scene.
Clint came at the tail end of this era and was thus allowed to play grittier type characters than the Duke was allowed to play. This was what set Clint's Western acting apart when compared to the Duke's style of Western acting.

Quite welcome. Yep, that he was.

Also, I started collecting DC Comics because I read titles like: Sgt. Rock (formerly known as) Our Army At War, G.I. Combat (formerly known as) Our Fighting Forces--I think? Jonah Hex, Scalphunter, Enemy Ace, Blitzkrieg, Wierd War Tales, The Unknown Soldier, Gunner & Sarge, and other DC titles. The only Marvel title I read was Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos.

One thing you Ladies and Gents need to remember about Duke. Duke came out at least 30 years before Clint Eastwood-meaning that his very early years were laughable-until about the mid 1930's. Also, he became an "A" list Star, because of the movie: "Stagecoach."

Another thing about some of his movies bing a bit "campy" you have to remember that those were his earlier movies made during a much different time than those of Eastwoods movies. I love his war movies but, find most of his 1940's stuff to be so Patriotic--which they were meant to be-so therefore, those movies will always seem a bit "campy" with the exception of Sands of Iwo Jima. ;-))

Nowadays when a man opens a car door for a lady, it means that either the car is new or the lady is new. And even then...

To those who think a certain way, I'm not trying to sway, I can pnly post my view.

My family fell apart when I was six. My dad was gone, and my mother started acting like a teenager-frequently gone.

John Wayne became my father figure. He became that which I wanted to be. I've been in leadership roles and/or jobs all my life. Ever notice The Duke always seemed to be in charge?

You might've not liked his acting, or views, but to a lonely kid in a remote small town, he meant the world to me.

I'm glad that he could be something of value to you, Lias. We choose what we want to be. Successful or not successful, we decide what we are and work to that goal. It helps to have a someone demonstrate goodness, even if it is only an acting job.

Welcome to the forum.

BRAVO, WELL SAID, very well said. I know of others who also had Duke as a role model when they had no other. You can meet some of these fine folks at: JWMB - The Original John Wayne Message Board! and John Wayne Both men and women have had Duke as their role model and I admit, he has always been one of mine. Duke had some great values to live by and also being very patriotic, and also a God fearing Man.

PS, welcome to this fine site Lias!!!

On the contrary, Sands of Iwo Jima was one of the campiest. Not Wayne's acting, persay, but the whole movie.
All that behind the scenes bickering, Sgt. Striker in town on leave. Gives that woman money
for her kid(vomit). Some Jap is calling out "Striker, Striker" during one scene and the other
guy says "aren't you going out to get him?" blah, blah, blah
One guy leaves the battle to get ammo but stops for a 'cup of joe' and his buddies get bayoneted by the Japs.(more vomiting)
It stunk.
