Re: Why I don't like John Wayne
Thanks Falcon.Jun, im Sure Duke will appreciate your nice comments ;-))
Now if we can just get people to view: Enemy at the Gates, Battle of the Bulge and U 571; with a much more open mind. Heck, I watch and like those movies, mainly because of just enjoying watching the cast.

Sorry Carl, I suppose it's the nitpicker gene in us But there are war movies I like, Sam Peckinpah's "Cross of Iron" for instance
Cross of Iron (1977)
Cross of Iron
There are good WW2 movies, like the one above, The Longest Day (including The Duke!!!), Battle of Britain, etc, and bad ones like the ones you mention. Being bad doesn't make them acceptable.

Hi wtid45, the only Duke movie I can think of that they discussed anykind of food product in was in the movie: "Big Jake," when they were on their way to the Mexican town of Escondera. The scene was at nighttime and there was a campfire going. However, the food that was being talked about was canned Peaches. The leader of that band of Outlaws that snatched Duke's Grandson (in real life, he was Dukes youngest Son-Ethan Wayne) and the outlaw leader came into the camp to tell them where to meet them with the money for the exchange. Duke had opened a can of Peaches and was eating them when the outlaw came into camp. Duke offered him some peaches but the outlaw declined the invitation to eat because: "peaches hurt my teeth" and Duke said: "I've been hooked on these since I was a yonker-never could get my fill."
Hope this helps?

Hi Miguel, you got a good point there. One war movie I never could stand was: "Beach Red." I have always hated that war movie. Another one I never could stand was: "From Here To Eternity." Why I always hated it, I dunno? However, i've reformed a bit on this one and now I like it-mainly because of all the great actors in it including Burt Lancaster, Ernest Borgnine, Frank Sinatra and Montgomery Clift. I was never much of a fan of his until I watched him in: Red River w/ Duke and Judgement At Nuremberg w/ Spencer Tracy and Richard Widmark.
Cross of Iron is a classic and gets better everytime I see it. ;-D

Thanks mate. Also, you guys in the U.K are lucky, you have a John Wayne Society over there. I wish we had one here ;-))
PS, just finished watching him yesterday in: The Longest Day & Sands of Iwo Jima. ;-D Nice way to observe Memorial Day.

Doc: "Don't get mad at me Colonel, I didn't bust the thing."

Hey Carl many thanks you might be right but im still not sure only thing to do is watch Big Jake, and go from there and as one of the local supermarkets is doing a push on jw films it should not be a problem.I cant believe you dont have a jw society over there all the best.Jason

Re: Why I don't like John Wayne
Hi Jason, thanks and, I too hope im right. I still haven't seen about 30 or so of his films and it's possible I am wrong but, I have a hunch about the movie in question being Big Jake. Also, if you get the latest edition of that DvD, you will notice that they added in several minutes of extra footage-which I had never seen before getting that DvD. One added scene is when it shows Patrick Wayne (James McCandles) getting some Buckshot taken out of his behind by his father. The Son did not want to cooperate and Big Jake threatened to sic his Dog-dog, on him if he didn't stay still.
I am amazed too that there is no John Wayne Society over here?? It has my stymied at that. I know the one in the UK, that if your a member of it, you get newsletters, free stuff and discounts on newly released John Wayne movies. I do know that Wayne Enterprises (which is owned and ran by Dukes youngest Son: Ethan Wayne) is "kicking around the idea" of possibly starting a John Wayne Fan Club. Some people might roll their eyes at this but, if something gets started, I already know that some VERY good things will come to anyone who joins.
Take care and best regards--C.

I made the wife watch the Searches with me last night she had never seen it and kept trying to tell me the the Indians wouldn't do anything bad to little Debbie. She is a rookie.
Best wester bar fight... cant think of one, but the bar fight in the Devils Brigade was pretty good.

Me either. I guess after seeing so many, they kinda run together. The one in Blazing Saddles was pretty good.
I'll agree with you on the Devil's Brigade fight. It was good, even if it was high fiction.

The best Western barroom brawl I have seen was in the movie: "Dodge City, which stars Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Alan Hale Sr and Gwinn "Big Boy" Williams. Not only did the fight scene last several minutes but, it involved about 200 brawlers.
I agree, The Devils Brigade brawl was a good one. Another great brawl was in the movie: Blazing Saddles.

Hi Wtid45, if you guys have a Wal-Mart somewhere near ya-that's where you can find some great deals on some of Dukes movies. A few months ago, I bought the Special Edition for Rio Bravo-which was priced at about $15.00. Recently, I saw it there for $9 bucks.
Those are some great movies that you listed. I don't have a copy of Hellfighters and McLintock---yet.
Miguel, check Dodge City out. It's been released both as a single movie and also with a collection of five Flynn movies. I THINK it was in the 1st Errol Flynn Signature Collection. If not, then it was part of the 2nd Errol Flynn Sign | |
