I just thought I'd ask - has anyone noticed a major difference in quality of search engines? What do you use for research? Are there any that you NEVER use?
I'm getting my masters in library science and the preffered choice among my professors seems to be google.

Absolutely, definitely endorse that as best general engine.
Like any engine, you've got to share the designers thinking to use it properly, especially how to refine your entries.

I find Alta Vista a very good search engine. I use it often.

Google certainly seems to be the best for 'our' sort of thing.
But I'm a great believer in using 'Links' - these often turn up interesting sites not easily found via search engines.

Indeed,
I tend to use the google first, maybe yahoo to see some if it has some additional info. To see a larger area I use Ixquick, if necessary.
As there are different ways to find the site you want, I try to find the site sometimes through the Pictures section in Google. Just choose the words of the pic and you can find interesting sites.
Like Hitler and Göring, Tiger and Africa, Rommel and 1942 etc etc

I dont like yahoo either--I have tried it typing the same info as I do with Alta Vista and I might get results for half there compared to what I get at Alta Vista.
Kai--you must get good results with Yahoo--I dont know what im mis-typing as to not get good results?

Carl,
I only use Yahoo to find extra info, as sometimes it brings a bit different sites up compared to Google. But the latter is my first choice.
But most important is to use different key words, however weird they may sound but sometimes , like I´ve said, very intersting sites can be found like that.

Ill certainly take your word for it Herr Linkmeister
I get into trouble with finding too much to look at on certain sites though--and find I wasted too much time looking closely instead of skimming.

Re: Search Engines
MetaCrawler Web Search Home Page is also a very good search engine being that it uses most of the good ones (including Google).
I am always satisfied when using that.

Re: Search Engines
For serching the web I prefer Google, I used to be an altavista guy. I prefer to find info in peer reviewed works or books, this tend to filter a lot of garbage, and I use goldrush for journals, and Amazon or Half for books.

Re: Search Engines
I use Google advanced for searches. Have not tried others except Yahoo. Google was better.
