Just before his death by a stroke in 1953, it has been well established that Stalin was planning a pogrom against Soviet Jewry which would be comparable to the Germans of Hitler’s Third Reich. This was the so-called “Doctor’s Plot” and is a classic example of the way in which Stalin perpetrated his Mongolian massacres. Firstly, charges were made by loyal supporters that certain doctors, all Jewish, were responsible for the murder of their patients. These charges were well publicized and orchestrated demands on the part of the public were made for the punishment of these unfortunates. Many prominent doctors, among them the Kremlin medical staff, were rounded up, horribly tortured and either shot on the spot or kept alive in dungeons for another of Stalin’s famous show trials. From a reading of material now available in Russia, it appears that Stalin’s ultimate aim was to use the excuse of murderous Jewish doctors to launch a terrible purge of all Jews throughout his empire, but most especially in Moscow.

The coming reign of terror followed a long-established pattern of arrests, extorted confessions, false accusations, ficticious charges aired in the press and the removal of many Jewish functionaries of the Communist Party higher ranks. At the same time,.thousands of boxcars were assembled at railroad sidings in and near Moscow for the sole purpose of deporting all of Moscow’s Jewish population into the winter wilds of Siberia.If Stalin had indeed followed through on his plans for the mass extermination of his Jewish population, it would have been interesting to see if the media would have replaced Stalin for Hitler in liberal circles as the greatest , butcher of the Twentieth Century.

Vicious Spies and Killers under the Mask of Academic Physicians

Today the TASS news agency reported the arrest of a group of saboteur-doctors. This terrorist group, uncovered some time ago by organs of state security, had as their goal shortening the lives of leaders of the Soviet Union by means of medical sabotage.

Investigation established that participants in the terrorist group, exploiting their position as doctors and abusing the trust of their patients, deliberately and viciously undermined their patients' health by making incorrect diagnoses, and then killed them with bad and incorrect treatments. Covering themselves with the noble and merciful calling of physicians, men of science, these fiends and killers dishonored the holy banner of science. Having taken the path of monstrous crimes, they defiled the honor of scientists.

Among the victims of this band of inhuman beasts were Comrades A. A. Zhdanov p1 and A. S. Shcherbakov p2. The criminals confessed that, taking advantage of the illness of Comrade Zhdanov, they intentionally concealed a myocardial infarction, prescribed inadvisable treatments for this serious illness and thus killed Comrade Zhdanov. Killer doctors, by incorrect use of very powerful medicines and prescription of harmful regimens, shortened the life of Comrade Shcherbakov, leading to his death.

In the first place, the criminals tried to undermine the health of the Soviet military leadership cadres, to remove them from the power structure and thereby weaken the defense of the country.1 The arrest of the criminals disrupted these nefarious plans, preventing the accomplishment of their monstrous goals.

Whom did these monsters serve? Who directed the criminal, terrorist, and harmful activity of these vicious traitors to the Motherland? What goal did they want to achieve by the murders of leading figures of the Soviet government?

It has been determined that all participants of the terrorist group of doctors were in the service of foreign intelligence; having sold their bodies and souls, they appeared as hirelings, paid agents.

The majority of the participants of the terrorist group -- Vovsip3, B. Koganp4, Feldmanp5, Grinshteinp6, Etingerp7 and others -- were bought by American intelligence. They were recruited by an branch-office of American intelligence -- the international Jewish bourgeois-nationalist organization called "Joint"2. The filthy face of this Zionist spy organization , covering up their vicious actions under the mask of kindness, is now completely revealed.

Relying upon a group of corrupt Jewish bourgeois nationalists, the professional spies and terrorists of "Joint," through assignments from and under the direction of American intelligence, extended their subversive activity even into the territory of the Soviet Union. As the prisoner Vovsi revealed under investigation, he received directives "about the extermination of leadership cadres of the USSR," from the USA. These instructions were handed to him, in the name of the spying-terrorist "Joint" organization, through Dr. Shimeliovichp8 and the well-known Jewish bourgeois nationalist Mikhoelsp9.

Unmasking the gang of poisoner-doctors struck a blow against the international Jewish Zionist organization. Now all can see what sort of philanthropists and "friends of peace" hid beneath the sign-board of "Joint."

Other participants in the terrorist group (Vinogradovp10, M. Koganp11, Egorovp12) were discovered, as has been presently determined, to have been long-time agents of English intelligence, serving it for many years, carrying out its most criminal and sordid tasks. The bigwigs of the USA and their English junior partners know that to achieve domination over other nations by peaceful means is impossible. Feverishly preparing for a new world war, they energetically send spies inside the USSR and the people's democratic countries: they attempt to accomplish what the Hitlerites could not do -- to create in the USSR their own subversive "fifth column." It is enough to recall the undisguised and cynical appropriation by the American government of $100,000,000 for subversive terror and espionage activity in countries belonging to the socialist camp, not to mention that, for this purpose, hundreds of millions of dollars, both American and British, will be spent in secret.

The Soviet people should not for a minute forget about the need to heighten their vigilance in all ways possible, to be alert for all schemes of war-mongers and their agents, to constantly strengthen the Armed Forces and the intelligence organs of our government.

Comrade Stalin has repeatedly warned, that our successes have their dark side 3, that they cause among many of our workers a spirit of placidity and complacency. Such moods are far from being overcome. We still have many complacent people. It is exactly this absentmindedness of our people that becomes the fertile soil for this vile sabotage.

In the USSR, we are ruled indivisibly by socialist relations. In the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet people won a victory which is unprecedented in history. In a surprisingly short period of time, the difficult consequences of war have been liquidated. In all areas of economic and cultural construction, we have successes. From these facts, certain people have drawn the conclusion that now the dangers of wrecking, sabotage, and espionage have disappeared, that the bosses of the capitalist world will give up their attempts to conduct subversive activities against the USSR.

But only Right-Opportunists can think and judge this way, people standing for an anti-Marxist view of the "fading" of the class struggle. They do not or cannot understand that these successes lead not to the exhaustion, but to the sharpening of the struggle, that the more successful is our forward progress, the more fierce will be the struggle of the enemies of the people, doomed to destruction, brought to despair.

So the immortal Lenin teaches, so does Comrade Stalin teach.

"In our revolution," Lenin points out, "more than in any other, the law was proven that the strength of the revolution, the strength of its pressure, energy, determination, and celebration of its victory will increase, along with this, the strength of opposition from the bourgeoisie."

Unmasking the opportunistic theory of the "fading" class struggle due to the degree of our success, Comrade Stalin warned:

This is not merely a rotten theory, but also a dangerous theory, because it lulls our people to sleep, leads them into a trap, while it gives the class enemy a chance to recover for war against the Soviet power."4

In the USSR the exploiting classes were broken up and liquidated a long time ago, but still there remain vestiges of bourgeois ideology, vestiges of the morals and psychology of private ownership; there remain holders of bourgeois opinions and bourgeois morals, living people, secret enemies of our people. Exactly these hidden enemies, being supported by the imperialistic world, will be harmful in the future.

All this obliges the Soviet people in every possible way to strengthen their revolutionary vigilance: to keep a sharp eye out for enemy plots. Just this fact that a group of filthy degenerates from the "men of science" were, over the course of some time, able to work with impunity, reveals how some of our Soviet organs and leaders lost their vigilance, having been infected with carelessness.

The organs of state security did not reveal soon enough the saboteur and terrorist organization among the doctors. In this, these organs should have been especially watchful, since history already knows examples5 when, under the mask of doctors, vicious killers and traitors to the Motherland were active, such as "Doctors" Levinp13 and Pletnevp14, who on assignment of enemies of the Soviet Union killed the great Russian author A. M. Gorkip15 by means of deliberately erroneous treatments, as well as important figures of the Soviet government such as V. V. Kuibyshev p16 and V. R. Menzhinskyp17.

Nor did the leaders of the Ministry of Public Health turn out to be up to the task. They overlooked terrorist wrecking activity of the vile degenerates, who had sold out to the enemies of the Soviet Union.

Exposing the gang of poisoner-doctors struck a shattering blow to the Anglo-American war mongers. Their agents were captured and neutralized. Again the true face of the slaveholding cannibals of the USA and England appears before the whole world.

The Soviet people with anger and indignation denounce the criminal band of killers and their foreign bosses. As for the despicable hirelings, serving for dollars and sterling, the people crush them, as loathsome reptiles. As for the instigators of these murderous mercenaries, this they can be sure of: that retribution will not forget about them and will find out the devious road that leads to them, in order to speak its weighty word.

All this is true, of course. But it is also true that, apart from these enemies, we still have another enemy: the lack of vigilance of our people. One may not doubt that, as long as we are absent-minded, there will be sabotage. Consequently, in order to liquidate sabotage, it is necessary to purge lack of vigilance from our ranks.

Late that same year, Kremlin Doctor Lydia Timashuk wrote a letter to Stalin detailing a plot by her mostly Jewish superiors, to curtail the lives of soviet leaders by sabotaging their healthcare. In January of 1953, Pravda wrote several scathing articles on Jewish doctors for their attempts to kill the soviet leaders, as well as lambasting the Soviet security services for allowing it to happen. Stalin flew into a rage, and order the doctors, arrested, thrown into chains, and beaten to pulp.

Shortly after Stalin´s death Beria ended the witch hunts, and the doctors were free to go. hundreds of thousands of Jewish political prisoners were released from the Gulags.

The Great Purge 1936-38 was a violent watershed in Russian history. Amidst the mountains of the dead, perished the world revolutionaries of 1917 – and their ideas. In those years Stalin waded in the blood of the Russian people for the second time after the collectivisation of the land.. Again,he used some Jewish fanatics and other bolsheviks to purge the big men. And then he killed them too! By 1941, only one Jew (Kaganovich) remained in Stalin’s central core.

In early 1953, Stalin hatched the Doctor’s Plot. He had already slain Slansky and the Jewish leaders of Czech communism. When he accused Slansky of being a tool of the Joint Jewish Distribution Committee, he repudiated the very men who had helped Trotsky to Russia in 1917.

Stalin told him curtly, “If you do not obtain confessions from the doctors we will shorten you by a head”. [tumult in the hall] ... the methods were simple - beat, beat and, once again, beat.

When we examined this “case” after Stalin’s death, we found it to be fabricated from beginning to end.

From November 1948 onward, the Soviet authorities start a deliberate campaign to liquidate what is left of Jewish culture. The Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee is dissolved, its members arrested. Jewish literature is removed from bookshops and libraries, and the last two Jewish schools are closed. Jewish theaters, choirs and drama groups, amateur as well as professional, are dissolved. Polina Zhemchuzhina, the Jewish wife of Foreign Minister Molotov, was sent to the Gulag as a "Zionist spy" after she had spoken some words in Hebrew at a reception for the Israeli ambassador to the Soviet Union, Golda Meir. She was released after Stalin's death.

Though the Great Terror of the late 1930s is widely viewed as the height of Stalin's purges, the number of arrests actually peaked in the early 1950s, and Stalin was planning hundreds of thousands more on the eve of his death in 1953. These arrests were spurred by the "doctors' plot," a supposed conspiracy among Jewish doctors to kill members of the government and destroy the U.S.S.R. at the behest of the Americans. Brent, the editorial director of Yale University Press, and Naumov, executive secretary of Russia's Presidential Commission for the Rehabilitation of Repressed Persons, trace how Stalin himself put together false evidence of the "doctors' plot," which was far more than a simple exercise in anti-Semitism and paranoid senility. According to the authors, Stalin intended to use the "doctors' plot" to accomplish several goals: to purge his Ministry of Security and upper ranks of government; to defuse the potential threat posed by Soviet Jews, many of whom had ties to the U.S. and the new state of Israel; and to provide fuel for an armed conflict with the U.S.

Beginning in the winter of 1948&endash;1949, more than 400 Jewish artists, writers, actors, and musicians were arrested by the secret police. Most of them were sent to labor camps in Siberia, where they died. In July, 1952, twenty-four of them were brought to trial, and on the night of August 12, 1952, were executed in a Moscow prison. This event is now referred to as The Night of the Murdered Poets.

In January, 1953, the Soviet government arrested nine Jewish doctors, accusing them of the death of two of Stalin's closest aides and claiming that they were involved in a Zionist conspiracy to eliminate top Soviet political and military leadership. The incident would have led to another Purge-style show trial had Stalin's sudden death in February, 1953 not intervened. The affair of the so-called Doctors' Plot ended one month later with the release of the prisoners and the admission by the Soviet government that it had fabricated the whole affair.

Brutal but essential reading

Beginning in 1948, 15 members of the committee were arrested and charged with capital offenses. All 15, like so many in the show trials of the 1930s, were innocent. But unlike those victims, several of the JAC energetically defended themselves once they came to a secret tribunal in 1952, barely a year before the tyrant died. Tortured, most confessed to their "guilt," but in secret session some renounced their confessions. In the basement of Lubyanka prison in Moscow, all but one was executed with a bullet to the back of the head.

The new book, "Stalin's Secret Pogrom," presents the grimly poignant record of their trial as well as speculation as to exactly why Stalin should have wanted these people put to death. The transcript of the trial is translated by Laura Esther Wolfson and annotated by Joshua Rubenstein, the Northeast regional director of Amnesty International, USA.

Rubenstein supplies the historical backgrounds of the 15 victims, giving in detail their life prior to the arrests – nearly all had been decorated for distinguished service to the state – bringing vividly alive what might have been otherwise a dry rendering of bureaucratic terror.

The trial of the 15 was as secret as their execution. According to Vladimir Naumov, a leading Soviet researcher, editor of the Russian version of this book, even their official exoneration in 1955, two years after Stalin's death, was still kept secret. Until now, it was generally thought that 24 Yiddish writers and poets were executed after those secret trials in the spring and summer of 1952.

Why this particular persecution? Given the onset of the Cold War and the establishment of Israel as a state in 1948, Stalin linked the threat of war with the United States to his suspicions that Soviet Jews had other loyalties. The Jews may have shown their dependability to the USSR in the war against Hitler, but should a conflict break out with America and the West, Stalin was convinced the Jews would betray him.

The JAC was unable to survive such tensions. The distinguished, and much honored by the Soviet regime, director and actor Solomon Mikhoels – he received the title of People's Artist of the Russian Federation for his performance of King Lear – was murdered on Stalin's personal orders in January 1948. The dictator's daughter Svetlana later overheard her father on the telephone approving the official story that the actor's death was the result of an automobile accident. Stalin had felt Mikhoels was too much of an actor to carry out the role prepared for him by the secret police for him to take part in any show trial. Hence, it was imperative that he die in an accident. Sent off to Minsk to evaluate a new play, Mikhoels was shot, and an accident was staged to make it appear a car crash. He received a state funeral.

Paul Robeson, who had known Mikhoels, and another member of the JAC soon to be arrested, Itsik Fefer, had insisted on a visit to Moscow that he meet with Fefer. The visit was arranged. Fefer managed to inform Robeson of his arrest but implored the singer for the sake of his friends and family to say nothing about his imprisonment once back in the West.

Back in America, Robeson denied reports of anti-Semitism in the USSR, telling a reporter for "Soviet Russia Today," that he had "met Jewish people all over the place … I heard no word about it." According to Rubenstein, Robeson justified his silence on the grounds that any public criticism of the USSR would reinforce the authority of America's right wing which, he believed, wanted a preemptive war against the Soviet Union.

Robeson never spoke out, even in private, or tried in any way to help his friend, but he was not the only person to remain apparently indifferent to the fate of these people. In 1950,when the American Jewish Yearbook carried the disturbing news that "leaders of the (Anti-Fascist) Committee and most of the well-known Yiddish writers were arrested and deported" (a claim only partly true), there was no effort made to save them by Jewish organizations in the West, Israeli officials, or the Western democracies. And this at a time when the memory of the six million of the Holocaust should surely have been all too alive in everyone's minds.

With one exception – Itsik Fefer – all the defendants were brutally interrogated – some beaten and tortured, placed in miserable punishment cells, subjected to nights of seemingly endless interrogation. "Giving a lecture, writing verse, literary evenings, meetings with young students, language lessons, the study of history, studio exercises, the theatrical repertoire" – any activity that writers, poets, people of culture might routinely pursue were reckoned subversive.

"Stalin's Secret Pogrom" is literally a terrifying, but infinitely valuable document to the times in which we have lived and still may live. This is a document no person who thinks he cares about the human condition should miss. It's brutal but essential reading.

He was indeed the leader of a massive nation with a massive population...What we think of how he got there or what he did to perpetuate his rule is another thing..

By mere fact he was got to be where he was and for the lengh of time..no saint more a devil, but had to be clever and a leader of whatever sorts makes him that great leader...Same can be said of Hitler...I stop at Sadman...thats more a crimminal orginisation in the best teachings of the Mafiosa.

Hi Urgh--I do agree with your post but, what I meant was that stalin and great leader--is more a contradiction of terms. But hindsight is much easier to see and have an opinion on.

The more i read and hear about stalin--just really flabbergasts me on how anyone but the uninformed, could ever place stalins name in the same sentence as "great leader."

Not saying he was dumb--or else someone else would have been able to "de-throne" him early on and instead of waiting for him to die in order for the leadership to change.

Thanks for the information, Carl. I think we all know about Stalin's anti-semitic views. He desdained all Jews, everywhere. And just because he didn't use sophysticated and industrialised mass-murdering sites he is not remembered as Jews-butcher as Heydrich or Höß... But certainly, our dear Joseph was a little worse than Hitler...
