So educate us poor Americans, who is St George and why is he a holiday ?
I know who King George is and Prince Andrew and Sir Jagger.

He was a Turkish knight wasnt he?
Shows how much I know...Its not a holiday TA..Youll see the odd cross of St George flying in the odd garden and public building...maybe..but unless England playing football on same day..your more likely to see kids pirate flags flying on garden sheds over here.
Seriously 9...wasnt he Turkish....if he was then Id say thats typical of us English..

Turkish, Greek, Palestinian, whatever, consensus says he was not Anglo Saxon.
He is, of course, the official Patron Saint of England of very long standing, but of other places also?

Amazing isnt it? The Mayor of London can spend time and money on St.Patricks day activities incuding a parade in London, but refused to do same for St.Georges day I believe.
Actually saw some pretty big flags flying in some areas on driving round today...Maybe we are getting a bit more showey....Bout time we reclaimed the flag. Any chane Otto can pur up cross of st.George English flag on here as well as Union Jack...Im sure the scots amongst us wont mind too much...

My guess Erich, is St. George and the Dragon symbolises man’s capability to defeat evil. Paintings, statues and effigies of the fight occur in various places of N. Africa, the Middle East, all over Europe and Scandinavia and in Russia. Usually the ‘dragon’ is shown as a type of winged serpent rather than a winged large bodied monster, Any ability of the dragon to breath fire seems to have been added recently and probably owes more to the legends of the Welsh dragon which is not a winged serpent of evil.
The City of London is still reputed to be guarded by the Griffin, mythical hybrid of an eagle and a lion and a force of good. There are Griffin statues on some boundaries. A comparatively modern development of the story is that in time of peril, the bell of Big Ben will strike 13 at midnight, and the Griffins will arise.

your statement about George slaying the dragon is exactly what is presented in the beautiful little Kirche. In the background of course is the damsel in distress throwing her hands up to the heavens as George deals the blow with his lance.....

Quite right urqh, but then what can you expect from Red Ken. I never forgave the little Trott b@st’d from the days of the GLC when he made wino’s Aldermen. That was MY money!
There’s a train leaving for France at noon, and I’d like him to be under it.
Re the flags, great, we should have St. George’s flag and St. Andrew’s and N. Ireland and the accepted Welsh standard of a Red Dragon on a green and white field.
I’d like to keep everyone happy but I can’t find a flag of a coconut floating in a bowl of curry, claiming political asylum?

Happy St. George's day. Actually the church I belong too is named after St. George.

urqh, what a shame the Monster Raving Loony Party ceased after Dave Sutch’s death A voice of sanity in a sea of bedlam!
Can’t say I’ve ever gone for any one party? I endorse Treebeard’s sentiments;
”I am not altogether on anyone’s side because no one is altogether on my side!”
There’s an interesting site dealing with the political compass. In addition to left and right (on a horizontal plane), they introduce authoritarian and libertarian attitudes on a vertical plane. Hence you now have a position left or right and also above or below that line.
I’ve found the site and started another thread based on it. It offers a free on-line test and assessment. Don’t panic, you don’t register and it’s for amusement only, but interesting.
Where’s this saying I want to get rid of curry? Freeloading economic ‘refugees’ yes, curry, and thereby our Indian cousins, no! But please, no forcing someone’s ‘culture’ on me. My ‘culture’ is the culture of ‘my house’. You come to ‘my house’ you embrace my culture. You walk like me, you talk like me. You don’t want to do that, stay where you are or go some place else. That simple. And by the way, pushing some emaciated goat around a piece of scrub land with a pointed stick ain’t culture.
Why are there so many Somalis in Northampton? Probably because Wellingborough is already full? It will get to the point where it’s actually cheaper to go and do a ‘Bush’ in Somalia so the refugees can go home, than keep them here! You see.
And BTW, I’m not a racist…….I hate everyone equally!

That makes me feel much better....
Unlike you hating everyone equally though...I get the feeling every one hates me equally, but Im not paranoid, its just the mum in law speading gossip...
Wellingborough? Too late old son...full of cockneys....No room for us scoucers there now..
Ive dont that test in the past, might try again to see if Ive mellowed...last time I took it I was a cross between Winnston Churchill, Adolf Hitler with tendancies to live the life of Ghandi... Maybe I read it wrong...

”Wellingborough? Too late old son...full of cockneys”
So that’s where they went! We wouldn’t let those Dick van Dike impersonators south of the rivva.
”Unlike you hating everyone equally though”
Occasionally I take a day off, OK?
”I was a cross between Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler”
A bulldog that goose-steps I gotta see
