Cool

Gents,

In august I will spent two weeks in Waldkirchen, in Bavaria (Germany). It lies close to the Austrian and Czech borders. It is about 150 km east of Munich and 100 - 150 km north of Salzburg.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to any WW2 related places I could visit in this area???

I have looked and besides Munich itself and a great museum about the sept. 11, 1944 airbattle in the Czech Rep. I couldn't find anything.

Anybody has any suggestions??

Stevin,

Not sure how far it would be away from you. But could be a day trip. How about Berchtesgaden.

No 1 place to visit would have to be Nuremburg - although I haven't yet been there myself I believe there's still quite a lot see .

Otherwise, as Mahross said, there's Berchtesgaden which was totally fascinating when I went about 5 years ago but be warned - I believe that there has since been a lot of 'tidying up' and redevelopment ( or erasing of history.... ). Ditto the Junkerschule at Bad Tolz which was in the process of redevelopment last year.

I'll be interested to see what else is recommended but I fear there's not a great deal to see. ( Of course, you could try looking for the 'Nazi Gold' )

Ah ! I just found this - click on the left hand side for photos : -

Stevin, you and your honey definately need to go to Obersalzburg up on the hill to visit what is left of the old house and the surrounding areas although much of the Third Reich runins have been bulldozed. The Berghof and associated buildings or more like heaps of rock....

what brings you folks to Waldkirchen ? Take many pics please

Actually--the ((oops-I put the wrong name in there, but you got the drift of it)) is a Restaurant now. It used to be property of the US Govt and was used a a rec area for our soldiers untill I think the mid 80s. Its not privately owned but definately still there and a s a restaurant--a VERY expensive restaurant I might add.

Also--the famous Weisskirche is in the area of Garmisch-partenkirchen anr or either Unter-ammergau and Ober-Ammergau--I forget which.

Anyway--go through Unter-ammergau as you will have to go through a modern Gebirgsjager military base--in order to go to Ober-Ammergau.

Once at or near Garmisch-Partenkirchen--go stay at Forsthaus Graseck--its VERY affordable and is a VERY nice place to stay. You can also take a wagon ride--wagon pulled by Clydtstale (SP?) horses and you can also take the cable car up or down the mountain. You can also take the trail down the mountain like Susanne and I did. If you do--better watch out for the slippery steps on the way down

Also--the view is more than worth it. On the way down-you will see waterfalls--etc and the water is so clean and pure and clear--it tasted good when I drank from it. Anyway--stay on the path that goes through the caves and expect to get a bit wet from the water flowing down the mountainside and seeping in some of the caves. Take a flashlight (torch) with you as there is no light in the caves and so dark--you cant see your hane in front of your face.

Ahhh What a great experiance.

The 'Eagle's Nest' teahouse is now the restaurant - and it's worth the trip. The Berghof itself was blown up in the '50s and various recent efforts have been made to remove every trace from the hillside.

Yes and also while you are in the S.E corner make sure the two of U take a fun ride over the Königsee !

The Wieskirche is the church in the meadow and is unreal, also while close to famed Oberammergau go to Ettal and visit the inside of the monastery.....again unreal ! take a taste of the local Liquoir as well.......yeah ! burp !

Would suggest if the two of you have time is take the route through the Graswang valley to Ludwig's Linderhof and then the back mounatin roads through Austria into Füssen the medival town as well as dropping off for a quick snack in Hohen- Schwangau/Schwangau. Although the estates/castles are typical tourist traps they are both worth taking a tour through and then a relaxing boat ride and rest on the beach of the Alpsee with your wifes hand in your's, sipping a great glass of Weisse Wein.....

also 9f you folks are way to the east visit the great church in Passau which is a pretty neat city. It has the largest Baroque organ in the world. Maybe take in an organ concert.

Soory friend this really does not take on the avenue of WW 2 sites but indeed has great historical significance and should not be missed

Wow! Thanks guys! Besides Munich I don't think any WW2 related sites are feasible. Obersalzburg/Brechtesgarden might be a little out of the way for a daytrip.

Erich, Passau, koningsee should be possible! Will definately try those!

Freiburg BA/MA is way out of the way. That would be a big D-tour and I I can't expect Chris to spent two days in an Archive.

But hotels are really cheap nowadays, if you can find a good deal, it surprised me. I will try if I can finally get to Freiburg later this year. NO PROMISES THOUGH!Again, thanks to all you guys for these suggestions! They are really appreciated.
