Thanks to a post made in another area by Crapgame, I am finally able to deduce what man was where during the famous Iwo Jima flag raising on Mt Suribachi.
...........#6..#5
.........#4#3#2#1.
#5 Is Rene Gagnon who is partly obscured by #1 Harlon Block (whos position was at the base of the flagpole and his back is to the camera) and is mostly obscured by #2 John Bradley.
#3 is Franklin Sousley who is directly in front of #4 Ira Hayes (who is shown with hands reaching for the flagpole but not touching it) and #6 is Michael Stronk (who is mostly obscured by #3. Sousley).
You guys "got the picture" now?

Carl, here are more details of the men who raised the flag and some photographs:

Great site Fried. In fact--I think it was the same site that I hopefully, was accurate in ascertaining which GI was where during the flag raising.

Marines do not take kindly to being referred to as "GIs"
I, on the other hand, am entitled to proudly fly a flag that says United States Army.

My Uncle was a Marine in ww2--and he did NOT mind being called a G.I.
