I hope this link works as it is a long one.

Please go to:

http://terraserver.microsoft.com/ima...17784&Z=12&W=2

If it works--it will be one of the most interesting things a warbird fan will see on the internet.

It worked for me Carl. Very interesting, does anyone know the total amount of B-52s there? I don't want to have to count them all.

Heh hehe--I figured you might like that site--now to get Martin and Erich to notice it

I don't know how many aircraft are there but--when time permits--it might be interesting to try and count them. Must be a few thousand aircraft there in the least.

That is a neat shot Carl !! I have a book on Davis Monthan AFB and it says most of the B-52's are the D models and a few F and G models. Only the H model is flow now days.

The book also says that once a month you can take an all day tour on a bus and take pictures of the aircraft. I don't think you can get off the bus due to the rattlesnakes but it would be a fun trip to do some day.

You can also look up your house picture on that site also or other military bases.

The book says there are 228 B-52's (book published in 1987) and a total of 2,512 military aircraft stored there. I am sure with all the down sizing of the military the number is higher. In 1987 it says that 170 F-4's were there but I am sure there are many more now unless they used them for targets.

Very interesting pic, thanx Carl!

I guess it would cost too much to re-use the materails in those planes ??

KP, as part of one of the SALT treaties with the
Soviet Union they are not allowed to break up the B-52's and have to store them in the open so the Russian satillites can view them each day and make sure the numbers don't change. SALT stands for Stragic Arms Limitation Treaty. (not spelled correct but you get the idea) I think the first one was signed in the late 70's.

It's not all waste. They do overhaul aircraft and send them to other countries as military aid packages and also they use engines and other parts to keep the current inventory going, such as the very old KC-135 tankers, C-130's, T-37's, T-38's, Huey's and Navy and Marine jets such as Harriers. They also donate aircraft to worthy museums and VFW posts and smelt the ones no one wants. Others are used as ground targets and still others are overhauled and used as missle targets for air to air and ground to air missles. Recently they used up most of the F-100 and F-102's for this and maybe some of the F-105's. I am sure the F-4 fleet are in line next as well as the early F-14's. Some of the aircraft are open to bid to civil buyers at auctions such as hueys and trainers and the US Forest Service gets planes for it's fire bombers from here also.

Well Carl, I see you are on the final approch to landing the 10,000 mark ! You should be able to knock it out by Saturday easy.

If I had any money I would buy you a computer for a prize, but as I told you before I am a State employee and you know how that goes.

This had nothing to do with this thread but I thought it was interesting. On the History Channel they did a piece on Davy Crocett and Daniel Boone and they said Davy's father sold him to be an endentured servet at 12 years old. They also said he survived the Alamo battle only to be tortured and killed by the Mexicans.

Ze Snoopy (Greg)is getting sophisticated no? (That's my best Frainch accent.

Thanks TA but--I think i'll not be able to reach that milestone till maybe Friday next week as my library time will be a bit shortened till then.

Main reason is that thanks to my friend Paul--I have a complete listing of all Victoria Cross and George Cross Recipients, and now that I have it--I have a project in mind--which was started yesterday.

I greatly appreciate the thought of wishing you could buy me a computer. As soon as I am able to get rid of about another 35% of my debt--the next big purchase I will make is a new computer. I'm scratching the idea of a used one because--to get what I want on a used one--I might as well as buy a new one--even if it does not offer all I want on it.

Thats figures--that is the program that was hosted by kevin costner? was it not? I hated it from just seeing the advertisement on THC. All they are trying to do is to change history to fit their "politically correct" needs.

Shame on The History Channel.

There is a program that I think the Discovery Channel made which talked about that possibility of Davy Crockett surviving the battle and being executed. This is all based on one mans recollection of the battle--many years after the battle and was written by several different people. This man was a Mexican Officer who certainly was at the battle but, was suffering from a Malaria-like disease as he was telling what supposedly happened there.

This man was delerious with his illness as he was telling this story.

Things can be interpreted in GOD knows how many ways. The claim that this "Diary" was that the Mexican Officer in question wrote it with his own hand--which was proven false and was proven that no less than 4 people--did the actual writing.

Science more than proved--that tho the paper this story was written on was over 100 years old--no exact age was proven, just proved that several people did the writing of the story.

This "diary" was supposedly lost for many many years only to be discovered by a man who dealt with antiquities, at a flea-market. This antique dealer, had also been known to have dealt with forgeries and had been caught at it.

His validity to me is ruined because of the case against this dealer and the scientific facts that pointed out that he was wrong in many of his claims.

There is more detail to this if you can stumble across it on this site. I posted it a few months ago. I just do not know what thread it is in.

I just notied this topic for the first time....DOH!!

We don't have enough ROOM in Europe for sites like this ! Surplus aircraft are scrapped with indecent haste while some of us dig holes in fields trying to find fragments of old warbirds....

( PS : Perhaps those B-52s are all 1/48 scale Monogram kits lined up to fool the SALT satellites.... )

Hans-Joachim (Hajo) Hermann lands his Bomber on a lone silent British Airfield (the one where the Dambusters Raiders are stationed at) He taxis his Bomber to a stop and throws the kill switch that operates his engines propellers.

Before the propellers come to a complete stop, Hajo opened one of the floor hatches and dropped through it with a thud. He tells his crewmen to stay with the Bomber to make sure some British Airmen do not steal it.

Hajo silently pulls out his Browning Hi-power .45 auto pistol, and checks to make sure a round of chambered, then re-holsters his weapon.

He was thinking that how amazing it was that no soldiers came to challenge him. As he silently slips away from his aircraft, he takes off and throws away his yellow lifejacket and his parachute.

Slowly Hajo makes his way around the various RAF aircraft parked along the field and near hangers. It is 2:33 AM and all is quiet except, for the raging party going on in the Officers Club -- which is located in a Quanset Hut at the end of the airfield.

Silently, Hajo makes his way to an area where there are about 200 55 Gallon drums of petrol--which he uses as cover to get nearer the O-Club. He stands in the darker shadows of the stacks of fuel drums and was about to move when, a hand reaches out and pats his right shoulder -- nearly making him jump out of his flight-suit in surprise.

The Cockney voice asked him: "Do ye have a light mate?" Hajo turned in a flash on his heels and sucker-punched the guard with an uppercut to his chin -- knocking him out cold.

Hajo then rubbed his fist because of the pain in hitting this British Gent's chin. His fist hurt badly and he feared that he had broken several tiny bones.

He reached down and pulled the unconscious soldier into the shadows of the fuel drums and then took out his scarf and tied it around the gent's mouth as well as used his handkerchief to bond his hands together with.

Hajo then made his way stealthily along the hanger building that was located next to the O-Club. He eyed some thick bushes located along the O-Club walls and which were close to the Clubs door.

He made a beeline to those bushes barely reaching them when the door opened and a very drunken pilot staggered out the door tripping over a loose board and falling face-flat on the ground--moaning.

This pilot took several agonizing minutes to stagger to his feet and he headed directly towards the bushes where Hajo was in hiding. This pilot then unbuttoned his trausers and decided to make a much needed nature call.

Hajo had to cover his face so that he did not get hit there. He was so ticked off--that he almost came out of the bushes to strangle that pilot.

His anger quickly subsided when he spotted the object of his mission. His object was making his way to a small tin shed. He entered the tin shed but did not close the door. The man lit a candle sitting on a tiny table and proceeded to gather a bottle of some booze and a glass, and proceeded to sit in the chair next to the table.

Hajo took this time to sneak up to this man's quarters and silently observed him for a few minutes--thinking of how easy it would have been to just walk right in and kill him.

The man was busy pouring another sifter of drink when all of a sudden, this figure burst in the door and closed it--aiming his .45 right at his face.

The man stammered: "Wh-wh-who are you a-and w-w-wh-what a-r-r- ye doing here?"

Hajo stammered in a whisper: "I'm here for YOU Herr Gibson."

"Wot!?"

"Im here for you Herr Gibson."

Guy Gibson was now fully composed and asked: "What do you want with me?" "You know that if you try to kill me that you will also be killed!"

"I know that Herr Gibson." "I came here to teach you a lesson."

Gibson: "Er, might I ask just whom ye are?"

Hajo: "I am Oberleutnant Hans-Joachim Hermann of the Deutshes Luftwaffe."

Gibson: "And?"

Hajo: "And I need to have a little chat with you Herr Gibson."

Gibson: "OK, but grab that stool next to me bunk and bring it here and there is an extra glass next to me bedstand."

Hajo reholsters his weapon and goes to get the chair and glass and then makes his way to the small table and sits opposite of Guy Gibson.

Guy then proceeds to pour a very generous helping of Cognac into Hajo's sifter and then re-fills his own sifter with a like amount.

They both heft their glasses to clink them together and at the sametime, they both put their glasses to their lips and start swallowing the warm firey liquid down their throats as their heads tilt backwards. They finish drinking at the sametime and put down their glasses.

Hajo: "Zat ist fine Cognac Herr Gibson." "Fine Cognac-danke."

Guy: "Please, call me Guy and you are quite welcome Herr Hermann." he said with a grin.

Hajo: "Guy, I was sent here just to tell you that you should have noticed this thread by now and to tell you at how ashamed of you I am because you had not seen it untill now."

With that, Hajo pulls out one of his Gauntlets and procedes to slap Guy across the face with it. Then, Hajo runs out the door, still running at full-speed towards his parked bomber.

As he is running towards his bomber, he takes out his flashlight and flips it on and off three times--signalling to his crew that they need to start the bombers engines so they can get the hell out of there quickly.

As luck was with Hajo, his crew noticed the signal and proceeded to start the engines. By the time Hajo reached the aircraft, all the finely-tuned engines were in full force and they were ready to taxi down the dark runway using only moonlight to show them the way.

The bomber taxied quickly gathering speed and all it took for them to be airborne was a taxi of 600 feet.

They quickly gained enough altitude to clear any trees and or farm buildings that might be along their path.

They were extremely lucky and made their escape just as a flight of 9 Spitfires approached on patrol.

((That will teach you a lesson Martin."
